Welcome Back!

It’s going to be an exciting school year at Swansea P.S.!

I hope everyone is enjoying a great summer!? Before the school year gets underway, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as your new Principal and update you on our construction project

As you may be aware, at the end of June, Karen Ridley retired and I was transferred from my Principal position at Humbercrest P.S., to the position of Principal at Swansea. I am delighted to be assuming this role during this very exciting time for Swansea. The implementation of Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) and the addition of a 16 classroom addition are just two of the highlights for this year. I must say that these two initiatives alone have consumed most of my summer. Having  lived through both a FDK implementation and an addition as recently as last year, I understand many of the challenges and will be working with all stakeholders to make this a very smooth school experience for everyone and most importantly, for our students.

The first phase of the construction project started in early July?. This phase involved numerous renovations that were necessary to implement FDK. I am pleased to let you know that this phase is almost complete. In fact, our JK/SK classrooms will open next week and our dynamic and caring teachers and Early Childhood Educators (ECE’s) are ready  to receive students.  There will be some minor finishes that will be required in order to complete Phase 1 of the construction– minor painting,  millwork, and the installation of a permanent door between the Community Centre and the Kindergarten area. This work will be completed after hours or on weekends and will not impact the school day.

While we are on the topic of Kindergarten and for those families that have a child starting FDK this September, I  would like to assure you that the Kindergarten team has met several times over the summer and  are ready to implement the Full day program. We will be monitoring our enrolment to ensure that we maintain the ratio of 15 students to one teaching adult. More details will be shared with parents this Fall.

You may have noticed that we have added two new portables to our site. This was necessary as classrooms located adjacent to the new addition would have been impacted by the construction and needed to be relocated. All portables will be removed from our school yard once the construction work has been completed one year from now.

Please note that due to the construction, the  parking lot is not available for this school year. Parents are encouraged to walk children to school, or if you must drive, please ensure students are dropped off safely in the designated areas. There is City parking at the back of the school that may be used by parents, staff and visitors.

On a personal note, I wanted to share with you that this week I had surgery. This was something that was not planned, but necessary at this time. I will be resting for a couple of weeks before resuming all my duties at Swansea. In the mean time, a recently retired Principal, Eileen Dick, will be assisting Vice Principal, Cherril George,  with the day-to-day operations of the school. Ms. Dick and I will be in contact daily. I also plan to be back for our Welcome Back Party on September 10th.  I hope to meet many of you at this event!

Finally, I wanted to thank everyone at Swansea for making me feel so welcome. It is very apparent to me that Swansea has a very vibrant and highly involved parent community and I am delighted to work in partnership with you. We know that the success of our students is dependent on this strong home-school connection. I also know that I am working with an extremely professional and dedicated team of teachers and staff. We will continue to build on the innovative teaching and learning methods to support an educational experience for your child that fosters intellectual curiosity, problem solving and critical thinking–so-called 21st century skills. The Swansea faculty will share more details on all of their programs on Curriculum Night, scheduled for September 18th.

I am looking forward to meeting you at one of our many Fall events, and to a great year filled with many positive achievements. I hope that the first day of school is a positive one for your child!
