Weekly Update for June 2, 2016

Grand Opening Celebration!
Yesterday Swansea marked an important day in our school’s 125-year history and officially opened our beautiful new 18-room, $6 million addition. Many, many people worked very hard over many years to make the addition happen and all enjoyed celebrating it at yesterday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception.

Dignitaries who spoke included Robin Pilkey- Chair of Trustees and Ward 7 Trustee, Sarah Doucette- City Councillor, Ward 13, Jane Phillips-Long- Superintendent TDSB and our own Mary Salvarinas- Principal Swansea PS. Liz Sandals- Minister of Education, sent special greetings. Also attending were TDSB staff, Taylor-Smyth Architects, members of the press, members of the parent advocacy committee and design committee, community partners, parents and former Swansea staff and students.

Thanks to our professional and articulate Grade 8 Tour Guides: Julia, Teodora, Hope, Miranda, Henry, Arefa, Katherine and Khoa. Special thanks to Ms. Ullmann and her lovely junior choir, Ms. Legacy for assembling displays of amazing student projects, Mr. Chris Higgins and his Media Club for the great video, Mr. Mike Higgins for the great demonstration of STEM learning in action, Rose de Rose for the invitation design, Virginia Wheeler for her expert photography, Susan Simon, Heather Chiavegato and Mary Salvarinas for the superb event planning and all those who worked behind the scenes to ensure everything went smoothly. One of the dignitaries who frequently attends this type of event commented on what a great job Swansea did. We have a great school and we love our new addition- thank you everyone!

Volunteers Needed for Milk Day
Milk Day at Swansea is a popular and important program, but volunteers are needed to continue the program next year! The milk program runs during lunch from 10:30am to 12pm. However, if you’re not able to be at the school, there are other ways to help, such as ordering milk, or keeping track of orders and money. If you are interested in volunteering, or running the milk program for the 2016-17 school year, please email carinaneuman@gmail.com

Angry Birds Movie
Special thanks to Susan Simon who organized the very successful Angry Birds Movie Afternoon Fundraiser last Sunday. Great job Susan!

Swansea Family Movie Afternoon was a huge success, thanks to all the parents and children that came out to watch Angry Birds at Humber Cinemas. The kids enjoyed the movie and we raised over $500.00 for our school….Go Swansea Go. A big thank you to Tiffany Scobie and Sarah Shephard for helping out with everything Angry Birds related. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to Ms. Salvarinas for helping us in making endless announcements re: Movie Tickets, time changes etc. This picture highlights some of the kids and parents at the Movies (Photo credit: Heather Chiavegato)

Fit Spirit
In the neighbourhood you may have seen some Swansea girls, in fact, 65 girls in Grades 6, 7 and 8 training 3 mornings a week for 10 weeks for this event. They ran either 5K or 10K events on the run on May 17th. They were outstanding and had a great time at the event! Way to go, girls!
