Weekly Update for January 26th, 2017

Extended French: Application Process Jan 9 – Feb 2
A reminder that the application process opened on January 9th. A Gr. 4 & 7 Information evening is planned for Monday, January 30th, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Library.

Pediculosis – Head Lice
During the first week of every term we do a school-wide lice check. Our recent check for the winter term revealed that we had sixteen cases of lice, with cases in almost all the grades. This number was higher than our usual number over the years.
In order to reduce this number we are asking parents to do the following:
· Do regular checks at home and if lice are found, please report it to us in order for us check students in the particular class.
· If you treat your child for lice it is important that you remove all eggs (nits) prior to the child return to school
· After treatment, continue to comb and check after the infestation for at least three weeks.
Tip: The comb that comes with the shampoo has proven to be not very effective, for better results you should obtain the “Licemeister” comb, which is very effective for removing eggs and bugs. You can obtain the comb at any drug store.
Thank you to our team of parent volunteers and the nurse who are diligent in assisting us to curb the number of lice cases in our school.

Music Room News
Does your child LOVE to sing? Are you looking for an excellent nearby choral opportunity? Swansea will be hosting auditions for Young Voices Toronto Feb. 6 at 3:15 in the music room. If you are interested in taking part, please sign up with Mrs. Ullmann. There is no obligation, and you will have the opportunity to go to a rehearsal to check it out.

    Music By The Lake

Application process is available MBTL Flyer. Due by February 16th for grades 6, 7, 8s

Guitar and recorder is in full swing! Ask your child about the BOPS program for guitar or the belts program for recorder! Students are expected to practise between classes. Guitar book prices have gone up to $10, and should be back in stock soon. If your child does not have access to a guitar, he or she is able to practise every morning in the music room from 8:10-8:30.

Our Junior and Senior choirs are hard at work preparing for our performance at the Toronto Marlies game on Feb. 12. Come on out to the game to see us! Choir members should have already purchased tickets through Mrs. Ullmann to ensure we are seated together.

Congratulations to our students who have auditioned for TDSB all city band and strings. Just going through that process is a great experience! We are proud of you!

Pizza Day Volunteers Needed
Calling all parents. Do you have an hour (literally just 1 hour, no more, no less), once or twice every month on Tuesday afternoons to give assistance feeding your child pizza? Then we would love to have you come and help us out for the Pizza Day program. There are only 9 Pizza Days remaining in the school year. If you could give us a hand with any of them we would truly appreciate your assistance.
If you are available to give assistance for an hour or two a month for Tuesday’s Pizza Days please contact Sean at tspurvis@hotmail.com . Thanks in advance

CBAM Piano Program
There is an exciting opportunity for your child to learn piano in a small group setting that’s coming to Swansea. This program is provided by a reputable school with qualified teachers for ear training, sight reading, theory, technique, rhythm and interpretation. It prepares students for RCM exams. The group environment encourages practice and motivation for children. Canadian Bureau for the Advancement of Music offers affordable, quality music instructions on a non-profit basis.

It is an hour lesson weekly that is recommended to start for grades 1-3 and goes up to level 8. Classes are held on Thursdays in the Music room #115 at 3:30 pm. Some spots are still available for registration. For January the yearly fee is halved at $40 per child or $38 family rate for 2 or more children each. This includes the TDSB and administration fees. Lessons are for a 9 week term and a progress report is given at the end of each term.

Rates are the following:
1st year $85.50/9 weeks; 2nd year $92.25/9 weeks; 3rd year $99.00/9 weeks
4th year $105.75/9 weeks; 5th year $112.50/9 weeks; Advanced $117/9 weeks

If the child already took lessons before, bring the piano books for determining his or her level. Exercise books are provided. Please bring cash or cheque made out to the teacher for payment on the 26th. If you have any questions, contact Bogdan Roslaniec, piano instructor at 416-537-0895. The website is www.cbam.ca for further info. Thank you.

Parent Partnership Committee on Mental Health
Calling All Parents! We are seeking your input on how we can enhance the well-being of all students in our schools. The TDSB Parent Partnership Committee on Mental Health and Well-Being invites you to attend a feedback session on what well-being means to you. All input will be delivered to the Ministry of Education to help further develop its well-being strategy.

There will be a special presentation on Mindful Parenting and Resilient Children, delivered by Heidi Bornstein of Mindfulness Everyday. Research has shown that the practice of mindfulness helps to develop a range of characteristics in children, including resilience, self-awareness, concentration and compassion.
