We are starting to move into the new wing! We are working with a Moving coordinator who will involve our students in this move. Our students are very excited to be part of this process. Parent Workshop on Social Media: January 26th at 7pm
Swansea Public School is excited to host an information evening with Chris Vollum on January 26th at 7 pm. He will be speaking to our community about the remarkable potential of students and social media. Chris Vollum is passionate about students and social media. He has been inspiring students, teachers, parents, and corporate participants in his “Social Media Fitness” workshops have authentic and meaningful content creation online. His presentation will illustrate the “how to’s” and “whys” of the world’s most prominent social sites and apps including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Vine, Snapchat, Tumblr and ASK.FM.
Parents: bring your mobile devices to the presentation as this is an interactive experience!
Also, coffee and baked goods will be on sale prior to the workshop, in the hall. Cash only.

Popcorn Sales
Popcorn will be for sale once per month on the last Monday of the month. Here is a Popcorn when students can buy their popcorn treat. Proceeds from popcorn sales will help fund the Physical Education department. A bag of popcorn costs $1.

Junior Kindergarten Registration
Registration packages will be available at the Swansea P.S. office from Feb 1st through to Feb 22nd. Registration forms included in this package are to be completed and returned for processing on the date specified in the package—either Feb. 23rd or Feb. 25th between the hours of 9:00 – 11:30 a.m., and 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. Your child may also attend on the registration date for a JK orientation and tour.

If you are not able to pick up the registration package and forms during school hours, you may contact the office at 416-393-9080 to make an alternate arrangement.

First Term Reporting:
JK, and Grades 1 -8 report cards will be sent home on Monday, February 8th. Please note that parent/teacher interviews for this round of reporting will be arranged only as needed by the teacher, or if requested by the parent. Teachers will be contacting parents for any students that require an interview. Please contact your child’s teacher, after Feb. 8th, if you wish to make an appointment.

During last week’s Parent Council meeting we had a presentation from Toronto Police Officer Cynthia Kirou on the Parent Safety Program. This program has been implemented by schools in an effort to combat parking and safety issues during both pick up and drop off.
What is the Parent Safety Program?
– The main purpose of the PSP is to eliminate or at least reduce the number of traffic hazards, which create a safety risk for children
– It is a Community based, non-confrontational program
– The program creates an organized “kiss ‘n’ ride” zone at the school during drop off and pick up
– The program depends on the active involvement of concerned parent volunteers

Swansea PS is hoping to launch a pilot of the program in May or June of this year, but we really need your help. Interested parents can reach out to hollystoddart@gmail.com for further information. In the meantime, let’s protect our kids and choose safety over convenience.

Grade 8 Parents: Baked Goods Needed Tuesday, Jan 26
The Grade 8 students will be holding a Bake Sale on Tuesday, Jan 26 at the evening Parenting Session in the large gym (Chris Vollum will be speaking on Social Media). Proceeds from the Bake Sale will help fund the Grade 8 Grad Dance in June. If you (or your Grade 8 student) would like to donate some nut-free baking, please contact heatherchiavegato@gmail.com or have your student sign up on the signup sheet on the door of classroom 206 (Mr. Firatli’s classroom). Please drop off your baking on Tuesday, Jan 26 between 6:15 and 6:45 pm, outside the large gym. Small, single-serve items preferred. Thanks for supporting the Class of 2016!

Club News
Girls Volleyball: The Gr. 6 girls’ volleyball tryouts are this Monday and Tuesday and gr. 5 girls’ volleyball tryouts will be next Monday and Tuesday at lunch. The grade 6 tournament is on Feb. 24th and the gr. 5 tournament is TBD. Ms. Cameron

Skipping Club: Friday mornings (8-8:30). We will work on basic skills, coordinate routines and hopefully help plan jump rope for heart. Skipping Club will be held in the gym. Ms. Munt

Drum Kits: If you have any dusty drum kits at home or know anyone who is looking to get rid of a drum kit, please bring it to Mr Corbin. Or if you want buy Mr Corbin a drum kit for the music room that would be amazing too! Drum workshops and other fun stuff (rock and roll choir, electric band, etc.) will commence! Mr. Corbin

Swimming: The pool is open Wednesday mornings from 8:00 am for grades 6, 7, and 8 to do lengths, or to make up classes that they may have missed. Please use the Community centre entrance to the pool. Guy Allen

Origami Club: The Origami Club will start on January 20th every Wednesday for a six week trial period. This club is for Junior students gr. 4/5/6 at the Library during lunch (11:30-12:30).
15 students per class with two volunteers and would like to ask $3 per student, which will be used to buy origami paper materials. Ms. Kim

Thank You Swansea Parents – A Message from Mr. C Higgins
Dear Parents,
I was in the skate and helmet room the other day helping my students get outfitted for skating. I could not believe the organization and availability of items. That does not happen by magic. It is through the hard work and generosity of the parent volunteers that students without proper equipment are able to safely step out onto the ice and participate in one of our nation’s favourite pastimes.
Secondly, your help in funding our STEM program has been complete and enthusiastic. We are now able to provide so many more state-of-the-art opportunities for your children. We are excited to be a part of the flurry of activity that is about to happen. This year promises to be an exciting time for all of us, as we prepare to enter the new addition and enjoy all the advantages it will bring.
Editor’s Note: Megan Davies organized the Skate Distribution Day and Carina Neuman organized the skates in the storage room. Special thanks to both ladies from Parent Council.

Valentine’s Day Cards Fundraiser
The Neighbourhood DoDads FUNdraiser will be sending home an envelope containing your child’s beautiful, handmade artwork to be made into Valentine’s Cards that could distributed to classmates and friends. This order envelope needs to be filled out and returned back to their teacher no later than Friday, January 29th, so that the students can write on their cards and distribute them to their classmates and friends in time for Valentine’s Day.

The Holiday Greetings card campaign raised almost $1,000 for the school and we are looking forward to continuing to raise funds for Swansea PS!!!

Grade 8 Grad Dance Committee – Volunteers Needed:
In a few short months the class of 2016 will graduate from Swansea PS. In keeping with tradition, grade 8 parents organize a dance for the graduates to follow the graduation ceremony (which will be held on Tuesday June 28th). If you are interested in helping plan this event the first meeting of the Grad Dance Committee will be held in the school library on Thursday January 28th at 6:45pm. If you cannot attend but would like to help out please contact megan.davies@sympatico.ca

Gr 7 & 8 Immunization Clinic by TPH
Toronto Public Health (TPH) nurses will be at Swansea PS on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 – AM to provide vaccines for Grade 7 and 8 students who require meningococcal vaccine. Please note that Meningococcal vaccine is now mandatory. Students who are not up to date can be suspended from school. TPH nurses will also immunize Grade 7 and 8 students who missed their hepatitis B vaccine at first clinic and Grade 8 female students who missed their human papillomavirus vaccine at first clinic.

TDSB Parent Conference 2016: Parents as Partners Save-the-Date: April 16, 2016
The Parent Involvement Advisory Committee (PIAC), Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), Mental Health and Well-Being Parent Partnership Committee and Model Schools for Inner Cities’ Parent Academies are partnering to bring one INCLUSIVE conference on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Registration information will follow.

This conference bring together many of the TDSB Advisory Committees, that have parent and community members, to guide, inform and present the topics in a workshop format. Advisory Committees bring parent and community voice to the Board and through this conference we hope to foster relationships between these TDSB Advisory Committees and the families they represent.

The expected outcome of the conference will be to reinforce the commitment of leaders and practitioners in schools and communities, to continue to build on existing exemplary school board and school practices and to establish new networks in order to close achievement and opportunity gaps, and to ensure higher levels of success for all students.
