What a fun event we all enjoyed on Tuesday! The weather was great, attendance was huge, the teacher dance was entertaining and activities and food were terrific. Thanks to the many parent and student volunteers, especially the hardworking parent volunteers led by Kimberley Wakefield. Welcome Back Swansea!
Grade 8 Students Rock Bake Sale at Welcome Back Party
Congratulations Grade 8 students- you raised a record $640 with your Bake Sale at the Welcome Back Party on Tuesday! Thanks to all students who baked and worked shifts at the table- there are S points coming your way. Thanks also to the Grade 8 Grad Dance Parent Committee who oversaw the sale. And thanks to all you Swansea parents and students who ate it all up! All proceeds will help keep the Grade 8 Grad Student Dance ticket prices low, so every student can attend.
International Language Programs at Swansea
The TDSB will be offering Serbian and Spanish lessons for students on Wednesdays at Swansea. Registration is on October 4th and programs begin on October 11th. Please see SWANSEA PS International Languagesfor details.

Self-nomination forms are due no later than Friday, September 22nd. Nomination forms must be dropped off at the main office to Principal Mary Salvarinas’ attention or emailed directly to her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Forms forwarded to the Principal via your child’s teacher will not be accepted. Please note that the self-nomination form includes a biography of not more than 150 words. Forms with biographies that exceed 150 words will not be accepted.
If more than 10 parents submit a self-nomination form, an election will be held on Tuesday, October 3rd. If you are completing a self-nomination form, please review the descriptions of the 10 Council positions here.
The new Parent Council will choose who performs each position at the Council meeting in October. To learn more about what is involved in being on Council, please attend the last Council meeting of 2016-17 which will be held tonight, September 14th at 6:45pm in the school library.

Lunch in Rennie Room
The Rennie Room in the Community Centre is available for children accompanied by a parent or caregiver to eat lunch. This is a smaller, quieter environment than the regular school lunchroom. There is a cost involved to eat in the Rennie Room; the fee will depend on the number of users sharing the cost of the permit. Families needing financial assistance for this program may contact our Vice-Principal Cherril George. Spark your creativity this fall with Art in Action!
Join Art in Action for a brand-new fall program! Our classes have an art history component as well as the tactile experience of working with a variety of art materials including watercolours, acrylics, collage materials, oil pastels, chalk pastels and more. Create your own great works of art inspired by famous artists such as: Georgia O’Keeffe, Steve Driscoll, Michael Snow, Wolf Kahn and more. This art enrichment program is geared for success with approachable step-by-step classes. Create a new piece each week.
Registration begins – Tuesday, September 19th @ 7 p.m.
Course Fee – $135.00 for 8 weeks (includes all supplies)

Chess Lessons- Tuesdays at lunch
Tamara Makharadze is a professional chess master from Georgia and will be offering chess lessons at lunch on Tuesday October 3, 2017—November 21, 2017 in the library. All students welcome. Cost $85

MakerKids Robotics at Swansea
Robotics: Make it Move
Create a robotic invention from scratch! Using Arduinos, industry-used microcontrollers, kids will code, wire and build a robotic invention. Through experimenting, team-work, beta-testing, kids will take responsibility for their projects from start to finish becoming independent thinkers and engineers. They will code using drag-and-drop blocks of code – perfect for beginners and advanced students. MakerKids will provide secure logins, laptops and robotics materials to use.
Fall session is 8wks; Cost=$223

CBAM Piano program is back at Swansea
Classes begin on Thursday, September 14 between 3:30 and 4:30 pm, in room 207 until June.
The program is provided by a non-profit school with qualified teachers for ear training, sight reading, theory, technique, rhythm and interpretation. It prepares students for RCM exams. The group environment encourages practice and motivation for children. Recommended to start in grades 1-3 and up to level 8.
If the child already took lessons before, please bring the piano books for determining his or her level.
Hourly rate depends on level and a registration fee of $90 applies for the year or $86 for more than one child. This includes the TDSB rental fee. Terms are for 9 week increments and report cards are provided each term.
