Swansea Weekly Update December 22, 2016

Message from the Principal and Chair of Council
It has been an exciting first few months of school. We saw another sudden increase to our enrolment in early September, creating the need to reorganize and add three more classes into our already very full new wing! All of our 875 students are all settled in now and some fabulous learning has been taking place. Literacy, Math and STEM continue to be a strong school focus. Please watch for our Family Literacy Night planned for the end of February. We hope you all enjoyed seeing students perform in our 4 Holiday concerts.

Parent Council continues to support our school initiatives. Thank you parents and volunteers- between Pizza Days, our QSP magazine drive and the Craft Sale we raised $41,400 for Swansea this fall! And watch for more exciting fundraisers coming in the rest of the school year- to be announced!
With your generosity, we’ve been able to fund many programs and events including our Welcome Back Party, free snack apple program and the Scientists in the School classroom visits. We were also able to purchase a new $10,000 sound system for our large gym and $19,000 in new IT for student use in classrooms (allowing every student to have access to technology daily).

A big thank you to our wonderfully engaged Swansea PS community- all the students, parents, staff and community members who continue to make these events and programs such a huge success, and make Swansea a great school. We wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and wonderful holiday season and look forward to a great 2017 with all of you.

Mary Salvarinas Heather Chiavegato
Principal Parent Council Chair

Thanks to Susan Simon, Kathy Richmond and Sharon Mittman
I’m sure all parents will join me in extending a big, warm, THANK YOU to Susan Simon, Kathy Richmond and Sharon Mittman who organized all the lovely refreshments that parents enjoyed at our holiday concerts last week. We all loved having a little bit of sugar or caffeine during these hectic days! You ladies worked so hard, and at a very busy time of year. Thank you from Parent Council.

STEM team update
On Friday, December 16th, 8 groups of Grade 7 bridge builders travelled to Oakwood Collegiate to test the design, construction and strength of their bridges. At the end of the day our best bridge carried 72kg, finishing 2nd in the strength category! While two of our other groups won awards for: best design and construction, and best journal and drawing package. All of our bridge builders should be congratulated for their amazing work and how well they represented Swansea.
Mr. Mike Higgins, STEM teacher

Music By The Lake
Looking for a great gift idea for your grade 6-8 child? Send them to Music By The Lake! Last year 32 students from Swansea attended this 8 day overnight music camp at the beginning of June. Students came back thrilled! All students are eligible to enrol for guitar, choir members can register for vocals, and TDSB band and strings students can apply for those instruments. Please visit the website listed below for the online application process. Scholarships are available as well! Please feel free to talk to Mrs. Ullmann about this exciting opportunity!
