Emergencies

Significant Incidence Report

Whenever the school gets notice of a significant incident concerning student safety, a letter will be sent home to parents/guardians. Such incidents do not have to occur on school property or even in the immediate Swansea community. This is intended to remind parents to review street proofing strategies
with their child(ren) and to help children develop a healthy respect for safety practices.

Inclement Weather Days

On rainy or unusually cold days, please ensure that students are dressed properly. School closures are rare, and will be announced on radio and news stations.

Elementary school students are kept indoors for recess and lunch times for a number of weather conditions such as rain, lightening in the area, extreme winds and extreme cold. When temperature and wind chill measure -28C or lower, students are kept indoors. Recesses and lunch hour may be shortened
if the temperature and wind chill reading is between -28C and -20C.

Fire drill, evacuation and lockdown procedures

The school will conduct three fire drills in the fall, three in the spring. One lockdown drill will be conducted during the school year.

In the event of an emergency, teachers, a school response team and caretakers all have set roles and established procedures. Drills are practiced throughout the year with the children.

In the event of an evacuation, a verbal signal will be given in the form of a P.A. announcement. SwanseaTown Hall and the Rennie Clubhouse are the school’s designated relocation sites. A sign will be posted on the door to keep parents informed.
