In February, 2015, the Ministry of Education released the revised Health and Physical Education curriculum to all school boards in Ontario.
The well-being of our students is a core component of the TDSB’s vision for education and our school is committed to the success and safety of every student. It is important that the curriculum is current, relevant and age-appropriate to support students with the best information possible to make informed decisions about their health and well-being
The curriculum is not new; it has been revised. The majority of the curriculum has been taught in our schools since 2010. Some of the updates address current issues relevant to student health and well-being and better reflect Ontario’s growing and diverse population. These updates include topics concerning healthy relationships, consent, mental health and online safety.
It is the role of the Ministry of Education to develop curriculum and it is the role of the school board to implement it. The school has no control over the content of the curriculum. However, our staff is committed to teaching the new curriculum in a professional and respectful manner that is both developmentally and age appropriate. As is our usual practice with revised curriculum, staff will be participating in training sessions related to curriculum delivery and will also have access to the resources and supports they need.
Parents are encouraged to read the full curriculum and parent resources, available on the Ministry website at www.edu.gov.on.ca If you have further questions about the content of the curriculum, please contact the Ministry of Education at 416-325-6870. More information about the delivery of the curriculum will be shared in September 2015.
