Parent Information Session – Wednesday Feb. 6 at 7PM in the Swansea Gym

Topic: Tackling Bullying and Other Obstacles to Kids’ Learning & Well-being

Swansea PS welcomes Jennifer Kolari of Connected Parenting for an informative evening on how to help children surmount anxiety, bullying and other related barriers to learning. Drawing from her vast experience as a child and family therapist and as a mom, Jennifer will empower parents with tools to connect with their kids, help them overcome social and emotional challenges, and transform negative behaviours to positive ones. The presentation will emphasize the importance of empathy and how it can be used effectively as a powerful way to help children grow and to strengthen your relationship with them as parents.

New Year’s greeting from Grade 2 classes

Hair Whisperers

Many thanks to all the Hair Whisperer Parent Volunteers (Lice Committee) who gave up a morning to help check the entire school for lice on Thursday, January 10.   Happily, we only found 7 cases- our lowest January check ever!  Thanks also to Ms. Mark and her class who gave up their classroom so we could conduct the check there.

Art in Action

Art in Action is coming to Swansea! Join us at lunchtime and learn how to make your own great works of art inspired by great artists like Georgia O’Keefe, Norval Morrisseau, Pablo Picasso and many others. We begin each session with a look at the artist’s life and career and then its your turn to become the artist. Create and take home a different piece of art each week!

We are offering our winter session to grade’s 1 – 4 on Thursday (starting January 31st) or Friday (starting February 1). Our session runs for 8 weeks and costs $130. Mad Science

Mad Science is offering a program on NASA and space exploration at Swansea this winter.  The program takes place after school from 3:15-4:15PM in Room 109.  Registration deadline is this Friday!

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space in the NASA: Academy of Future Space Explorers Program. We will take children on a voyage of discovery. With unique hands-on activities, amazing demonstrations and fun educational take-homes, this is an experience that is truly out of this world. In every class, children build a fun and educational take home to fuel their future explorations!

Topics: Planets and Moons, Atmosphere and Beyond, Space Phenomena, Sun and Stars, Rocket Science, Space Travel, Space Technology and Living in Space.

Grade 1-6: Tuesdays, January 22 – March 19, 2013 (no class March 12)

Social Media Seminar at Fern Avenue PS

On Thursday January 17, 2013 at 6:30 pm, Fern Avenue Public School will be hosting a social media awareness night in the Auditorium.

Understand the significant impact Social Media plays in students’ lives. Learn how to minimize potential risks associated with cyber-bullying with Chris Vollum, creator of Facebook 101 recognized authority on Facebook, Twitter & Tumblr.
