Update on Parent Survey
The Swansea Parent Survey has now closed. Many thanks to all 256 parents who took the time to complete the survey online and on paper. We’re delighted with the rate of response. Results are now being analyzed. Look for a report of the findings in the new year.
Update on Swansea PS addition
The ad hoc committee of concerned parents at Swansea continues to advocate for the TDSB and Ministry of Education to resolve their conflicts and release the funds for Swansea’s much-needed addition.
Following the Trustees vote to defeat the revised five-year capital plan, committee members undertook another letter writing campaign, contacting all trustees who voted for and against the plan and sharing their appreciation and concerns, respectively. The group also staged a press conference at the Queen’s Park press gallery, with the support of MPP Cheri Dinovo, on November 28th. At the conference, Robin Pilkey, co-chair of Swansea’s Parent Council, was joined by three other parents representing Swansea, Runnymede, and Keele. All spoke to their concerns about the political quagmire that has found them in an untenable position due to the intransigence of these decision-makers. Many of you may have seen and heard the coverage of this challenge resulting from the press conference on CityTV, CTV and CBC over the past week. As well, Megan Davies, Parent Council member, was interviewed on the CBC radio program Metro Morning earlier this week. These segments can be viewed or listened to on the council website (swanseasc.wordpress.com).
The committee continues to agitate for progress, with additional requests for an audience with the Minister of Education and her senior staff. They are also planning a possible event to take place in January of 2013. In the meantime, at the TDSB Board meeting in December a motion will be put forward to hire Taylor Smyth Architects (www.taylorsmyth.com) to begin working on the designs as soon as the funding freeze is lifted.
