From the Principal’s Desk – April 26th

Spirit Days —  The last Friday of the month is spirit day.  April 27th will be “Job Day.”  Students (and staff) are asked to come to school dressed in a costume to represent any job.  Students still need to respect the dress code and choose an appropriate job. Next month will be “Rainbow Day,” on May 25th.  Each class is asked to choose a colour, and all class members dress wearing that colour.  We hope to create a great photo of the kids on the hill outside, or failing that, in the gym.

Fundraising —  This summer Ms. Legacy will be joining Mme. Chen (a former teacher at Swansea) in Burkina Faso.  They will be working with a school sponsored by Bright Futures of Burkina.  Working with the Me to We group her goal is to take $1000 to give to this organization.  Over the next two months they will be doing the following fundraising activities.

Class Change Jars – May 1 to June 1st —  Classes can choose to take a decorated jar from our student reps.  Each jar will have a goal line of $13.75 – this is how much it costs to sponsor a child to go to school for one month.  Our goal is to get 12 classes to raise $13.75 so we can send one student to school for a year

Hat Day – May 10th — Student can pay $2 to wear a hat for a day.  We will monitor who actually pays by giving a decal that they pin to their hat.  Student reps will go to classes and exchange decals for money…no money, no decal, no hat.

Bake Sale – May 17th — Nut free goodies will be for sale after school.

Water Walk – June 8th p.m. — Students sign up in groups of 4-5 and get pledges for their 1-4 laps around the field (depending on age/grade).  There will be a $25 minimum for each team.  Each group will be given 2 buckets (smaller sizes for the little ones) filled half with sand, half water, and they relay around the field.

Benefit Concert – June 14th 2-3pm, grades 4-8 — Henry Nozuka (a former Swansea student) and friends will be performing. We would ask for a $2-5 donation to attend the concert.

Grad 8 Committee Meeting –Grad Committee Meeting to be held on Tuesday May 2nd at 7:30 pm in the Swansea School Library. All are welcome!

Grad Photos — Due to scheduling issues some grade 8 students missed their grad photos.  The photographer will be returning on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 1st to complete grad photos and retakes are scheduled for the afternoon of Monday, May 14th.

Car Seat Clinic —  Toronto Police Force in partnership with Swansea Public School Safe and Caring School committee is hosting a car seat clinic in the Swansea

School Parking lot on Saturday, May 12th at 10:00 am. Please come to the car seat clinic and get your child’s car seat checked out and installed properly.

Swansea Ecoschools Update ––  In our quest for Ecoschools Gold, here are some important dates and information:

May 1th – Mieke Foster of Ecoschools will be at Swansea in the morning for our second waste audit. We desperately need one or two parents to help organize the students.

May 4th – Councillor Sarah Doucette will be joining us for our schoolyard clean-up in the afternoon.  Parents are welcome to come along and help as well.  Rubber gloves provided.

Apples: We love our Apple program! But we want to compost the cores. We need resealable containers so classes can collect apple left-overs and take them to the compost bin outside the kindergarten rooms.

One plant per classroom: Recently, Swansea enjoyed a visit by former student Nicholas Montgomery, who shared information about his exciting initiative – http://oneplantperclass.org/. With cuttings from Ms. Balzereit, we have already made some new plants for classrooms.

May 14th- Lisa Fisk of Ecoschools will be conducting a final audit to determine how we did this year.  We will have to wait until September for feedback on our progress.
