Swansea Pub Night success
Friday’s pub night fundraiser was a terrific success! Two hundred members of the school community came together for a terrific night out at The Crooked Cue, and over $25,000 was raised through ticket sales, a raffle, and a live and silent auction. Proceeds from the event will go towards an Outdoor Learning Centre at Swansea, and to help make improvements to the lunchroom.

Congratulations to committee chair Kathy Richmond and her team of helpers; the concept, planning and execution came together to make a great evening, and a huge show of support for Swansea P.S. Thank you also to all the teachers and parents who donated auction items. Check out the photos on Snap’d

If you won an auction item but haven’t paid for it or picked it up yet, please email kathy@nafor.com

From Parent Council
What a success! Our Pub Night Fundraiser last Friday April 7 at the Crooked Cue was a great social event for Swansea parents as well as a very successful fundraiser. Our estimated revenue was over $25,000! All net proceeds will go to lunchroom improvements and our new Outdoor Learning Centre.

Many thanks to everyone who bought tickets, contributed and bought auction items and bought 50-50 raffle tickets. And special thanks to our fabulous Pub Night Committee, particularly Chair Kathy Richmond. They all worked so hard!

Heather Chiavegato
Chair, Parent Council 16-17

From a Swansea Dad
To Swansea PS Volunteers,
I want to thank you all for all you do, to make the Swansea school and community such a vibrant, healthy, caring space to live and grow up in.

Whether it is helping out at student council, diligently looking after our children’s health at school, organizing events that help support our school. I just want you to know that I think we have the greatest Moms/Leaders, a neighbourhood could ever ask for.

I can only imagine the late night emails, the rushed/ missed dinners, school politics, and just general exhaustion that each of you have persevered over the years. Your hard work and dedication to ensure that not only your children, but all our children, have the greatest opportunities to excel both in education and as individuals. You are the heart, and soul of our community. Your generosity of time and energy, is what keeps our community thriving.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. I am so very lucky that my child is being raised in your village.
Thank you to each and every one of you.

Public Consultation Before- and After-School Programs and Lunchtime Supervision
In response to a Motion passed by the Board of Trustees in October, TDSB is reviewing before- and after-school programs and lunchtime supervision for children in Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) classrooms, so we can learn about areas of strength and areas for improvement.

The project is being guided by Dr. Joel A. Lopata, an external research consultant leading the collection and analysis of information gathered.

To date, we have already consulted an advisory group, including Toronto Children’s Services, to review and provide feedback on the research plan, and are currently collecting data using several methods including:
– Surveys,
– Focus groups, and
– Public consultation

With already over 200 survey responses from an array of stakeholders with direct experience in FDK classrooms collected, we can safely say that engagement in this research is very strong.

Below, you will find a link to the on-line survey to share with stakeholders (e.g., parents/guardians of 4 and 5-year-old children) who have direct experience with FDK Before- and After-School Programs and/or Lunchroom Supervision in FDK classrooms: www.surveymonkey.com/r/tdsbfdk2017.

The Review requires an opportunity for consultation. Dr. Lopata will facilitate, a session to gather public input, as part of his research, on Saturday April 22nd, 2017 between 9:30-11:30 am. The session will take place at The Toronto District School Board’s office located at 5050 Yonge Street. Child minding will be available. Here is a notice of this meeting that you may wish to circulate. A copy of this notice will be shared with FDK Before-and-After School Operators.

As always, we thank you for your support. The aim is to conclude this Review by the end of the school year and to report the results and recommendations to The Board of Trustees.

Questions may be directed to Colleen Russell-Rawlins, Executive Superintendent, Learning Centre 3 and Early Years at colleen.russell-rawlins@tdsb.on.ca.

Swansea Weekly Update March 9, 2017

Mumps in Toronto
Toronto Public Health has requested that the attached Mumps be sent home with students. As you may be aware, Toronto Public Health is investigating a mumps outbreak in the city. The mumps virus is found in saliva, and is spread through coughing, sneezing, kissing, and sharing drinks, utensils, food or water bottles. The risk in Toronto schools is low because most schools have high vaccination rates. However, a case has been identified at a Toronto school. Please see attached letter for more details.
