Gr. 8 Grad Trip Parent Information
Next week we will be heading off (in the WEE early hours) for Quebec City for the Grade 8 Grad trip. While the students will be having a meeting on Friday morning to get a copy of the final itinerary and go over some expectations, here is a quick summary for you:
Departure: Tuesday, June 20th at 6:30 – PLEASE ARRIVE AT SCHOOL AT 6:15am.
Return: Friday, June 23rd at ~9pm
Money: All activities and meals EXCEPT lunches are provided so the students need money for four lunches. Beyond that, the only money they require is for any souvenirs or knickknacks they might want to purchase. It is not advisable to send the students with large sums of money.
Clothing: Apart from layers for hot days or perhaps rain (it is currently calling for rain on the Wednesday), we are going whale watching so appropriate dress for that is advised.
Rules: All school rules apply, and there are to be NO electronics (apart from personal handheld devices) brought on the trip. There is no way to guarantee safety and would be left in the hotel or on the bus, so unless it can fit in a pocket, we ask that it remain at home.
Security: There is a security guard on duty every night and students are expected to remain in their rooms. There is a separation of male and female rooms; students will be advised that they are not to go into the rooms of the opposite gender – if there is a problem at the hotel (or at any point), we are reminding the students that they could be sent home (at parents’ expense).

We are looking forward to a great time!

Mental Health & Wellness Symposium
At Swansea we strive to integrate mental health and well- being into the daily lives of our students. This year our Grade 7 Mental Health & Wellness Symposium will be held on June 21st, 2017. At the symposium students will cover topics such as, Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Mindfulness, Healthy Eating and Healthy Relationships.

Students will be divided into groups and they will rotate to various workshops. The morning session workshops will be discussion oriented led by facilitators. The afternoon sessions will be hands–on, students will participate in yoga, art and preparation of healthy meals.

It promises to be a very fun- filled and educational day.

WE Club News
On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 20th Swansea will be hosting its Annual Water Walk. Teams of 4-5 students will be involved in carrying buckets of water a distance of 400 metres for primary students and a 800 metres for junior and intermediate students.

Each team must raise a combined total of at least $25. All funds raised are going to WE (Free the Children) Charity. It will support the building of a well in a community in Kenya. We raised $3000 towards the well with last year’s talent show and hope to raise the remaining $2000 needed with this year’s Water Walk. https://www.we.org

Interested students must form a team of 4-5 and complete a registration form, found outside room 120 no later than Friday, June 16th. Each team member will take a pledge form and collect donations for their team, due by Tuesday, June 20th. Students must not solicit donations from strangers. Cheques can be made out to “Swansea Public School.” We hope that your son/daughter will join us for this exciting event to help build a well!

Last Pizza Lunch is Tuesday, June 20th

Parent Volunteers Needed
If you are interested in volunteering to lead one of our important fundraisers next year- QSP, Craft Sale, Pub Night or Milk Program, please contact us at swanseaps@gmail.com
Without these important fundraisers, we may have to cancel important, longstanding programs that benefit Swansea students including Scientists in the School, Apple Program (free snack apples for every student) our Holiday Fund (which helps Swansea PS families in need during the holidays) and more.

Class Coordinators Needed for Next Year
It’s a great way to connect with parents and teachers, and all work can be done from home. Duties would include sending out emails, and/or using the Remind App to inform parents about class schedules and activities. Helping to recruit volunteers, communicating to parents regarding parent council, or school initiatives. Please send an email to carinaneuman@gmail.com if you’re interested.

School Zone Safety Update

Here’s an update of the student safety initiatives Parent Council currently has in the works:
Speed Reduction to 30k along Windermere: Petitions were submitted to Transportation in November 2016. The results of the study should be in by this fall.
Speed Reduction to 30k along Morningside: Petitions were submitted to Transportation in November 2016. The results of the study should be in by this fall.
Street markings along Windermere when entering School Zone: In the works as part of the City’s New Road Safety Plan. Awaiting timeline from Traffic Management Centre, Traffic Safety Unit.
Pedestrian Street Markings at Windermere & Deforest: Traffic Operations staff have submitted an application for funding for curb depression work – which will make this an official pedestrian crossing. Once the curbs are cut, the crosswalk lines will be painted. Turnaround time TBD. In the meantime, 11 Division has been contacted for more enforcement at this intersection.
“Watch Your Speed” Program/Digital Speed sign for Windermere: We have applied to be one of the schools chosen to get one of these digital signs. Traffic Management will contact us by July 2017 to let us know which schools have meet the eligibility requirements for this round of funding.
Application for Crossing Guard for Waller and Lavinia: This remains a dangerous spot for pedestrians as cars are continue to park in accessible spots, park in the bus loading zone and back up or park over the crosswalk. Council will be submitting an application for a crossing guard to help manage the hazards at this intersection. 11 Division has recently been called to monitor the area for the last few weeks of school.

Grade 8 Graduation
On Tuesday, June 27, 2017, Swansea Public School will be holding its grade 8 graduation ceremony at 6:30 pm in the gym. Graduates are asked to arrive no later than 6:15 and proceed up to the 2nd floor to report to their homeroom teacher.

Prior to Grad Ceremony, there will be a Reception for parents in the Rennie Room from 5:30 – 6:15 pm.

As to avoid any rush of photographers there will be an opportunity for pictures for a short while following the ceremony.

Following the graduation ceremony, there will be a Dance for the graduates. A letter and permission form has been sent home with each student.

Parents always ask us about the appropriate clothing for graduation and we suggest that the students should be dressed nicely, in clothing somewhat dressier than they would wear to school but not formal attire! Keep in mind that our gym will be very hot and students will be required to sit quite still for about 2 hours. They must be wearing clothes that are appropriate (meet Swansea’s dress code), comfortable and cool.

Our goal is to ensure that all our grade 8 students have the opportunity to invite their closest family members to the Graduation Ceremony. Since Swansea’s gymnasium has limited seating capacity, we are asking that each grade 8 student invite a maximum of four (4) of their closest family members to the Graduation Ceremony on June 27th. Admission vouchers indicating the number of closest family members attending the Graduation Ceremony will be issued and distributed to students at the end of graduation rehearsal on June 26th.

Please accept our best wishes for your child’s graduation and we look forward to seeing you on June 27th.

To make a donation, you may:
1. Send an e-transfer to swanseaps@gmail.com
2. Send a cheque to the school Office via your child’s teacher. Please make the cheque payable to the Xavier Morgan Memorial Fund.

Thank you to the parents and community members who have generously donated to this fund

Sun Safe Behaviour
Getting students outside and active is good for their health, but too much sun can have serious side-effects. We encourage all of our students to practice “sun safety.”
What exactly does sun safe behaviour look like?
• Cover up: Even on days with a moderate UV index, students should wear a hat and sunglasses, especially if they’ll be outside for over 30 minutes.
• Stay cool: Students should stay in shady areas, particularly at midday when the sun is strongest.
• Use sunscreen: Choose sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher that include protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
